Occupational Therapist Nonhlanhla Mbokane shares practical ways organisations can create workplaces where employees feel supported, valued and empowered to succeed.

South Africa (15 July 2026) – Workplaces are changing, and perhaps one of the most encouraging shifts is that mental health is finally becoming part of the conversation.

According to Occupational Therapist Nonhlanhla Mbokane, creating a mentally healthy workplace isn’t about removing every challenge from the workday. Instead, it’s about building environments where people feel supported, respected and able to do their best, even when life gets tough. After all, employees don’t leave their personal lives at the office door, and work itself can have a huge impact on overall well-being.

Mbokane shares a few simple but powerful ways organisations can build a healthier workplace culture:

Create a Safe Space to Speak Up

Employees should feel comfortable asking questions, raising concerns or admitting mistakes without fear of being judged. A culture of trust starts with open conversations.

Rethink How Work is Organised

Sometimes reducing stress is as simple as clearer expectations, manageable workloads and respecting employees’ time outside of work.

Make Support Easy to Find

Whether it’s counselling, financial guidance or wellness programmes, employees should know where help is available and feel encouraged to use it.

Give Managers the Right Tools

Managers don’t need to be therapists, but they can make a real difference by recognising when someone may be struggling and knowing how to guide them towards the right support.

Don’t Wait for Burnout

Regular check-ins, realistic workloads and encouraging employees to rest before they reach breaking point can make all the difference.

Celebrate Wellbeing Alongside Performance

Success isn’t only measured by deadlines met and targets achieved. Employee wellbeing, engagement and a healthy workplace culture are equally worth investing in.

It’s an encouraging reminder that positive workplaces don’t happen by accident. They’re created through everyday choices that help people feel seen.
