From a heartbreaking surrender to an unexpected bond, this is the story of how one frightened Border Collie found safety and belonging.
Knysna, South Africa (15 December 2025) – On 11 October, Buddy the Border Collie was surrendered to the Knysna Animal Welfare Society. From the moment he arrived, one could tell the change was overwhelming.
“He looked back at his owner, pleading with his eyes to go home,” Knysna Animal Welfare Society shared on social media.
Having lived in a loving home since being a puppy, Buddy wasn’t prepared for the stress of a shelter environment, and it was clear he needed care and patience to help him adjust.
By coincidence, Ashleigh and Alwyn were visiting the kennels that same day, hoping to find a dog who could befriend their cat. While they didn’t find the right match, they saw Buddy’s distress and immediately offered to foster him until a permanent home could be arranged. Buddy moved to Sedgefield, where he temporarily gained a sister, a tabby named Muffins. The adjustment wasn’t easy. Buddy struggled with anxiety and a fear of men, cried when left alone, and tested Muffins’ patience.
With the help of Bianca from Happy Dogs Training, Buddy began to regain confidence. Slowly, he learned to manage his worry, Muffins adjusted, and peace returned to the household. Buddy blossomed into his dad’s best friend and his mom’s right-hand companion.
Fast forward to 11 December, Ashleigh and Alwyn made it official, they adopted Buddy! Reflecting on the journey, they said, “Fostering saves lives.” Stepping in at the right time can completely transform an animal’s life.
