The Uvongo teen’s passion for triathlon started with a surprise win in Grade 1; now he is ready to represent South Africa.
Uvongo, South Africa (30 July 2025) – Before the sun even rises, Oliver Delport is already on the move! Cycling through the sugar cane fields of Oribi or the pavements near St Mike’s Beach. At just 18, the Sheppie High matric learner’s dedication is nothing short of inspiring as he prepares to represent South Africa at the World Triathlon Championships in Australia this October.
His passion for triathlon ignited early. Oliver recalls his very first race back in Grade 1.
“I was invited to that triathlon by a friend. I surprised myself by winning. It was overwhelming and pretty cool.”
That first taste of victory set him on a path towards a lifelong dream, turning professional in triathlon.
But Oliver’s journey has not been linear. He has balanced an impressive mix of sports: cricket, rugby, cross-country, and swimming. All of which helped shape him into the all-round athlete he is today. It was not until the COVID lockdowns paused school sports that Oliver realised triathlon was where his heart truly lay.
A typical day demands discipline.
“I wake up at 4am for cycling intervals, then head to school from 7:30 to 2:30. After school, I jump straight into swimming training until almost 7pm. Then I catch up on schoolwork and try to get to bed early. It’s tough but it’s what it takes.”
Despite the cold winter mornings, Oliver’s goal keeps him moving.
“Thinking about Worlds gets me up every time. I don’t want to miss a session. I want to be the best I can be when I’m there.”
Qualifying to represent South Africa is a dream he realised he cannot give up on.
“It means everything. I’m living what I dreamt of as an eight-year-old.”
At the World Championships, Oliver’s focus is straightforward.
“It’s my first time on such a big stage. I’m excited to represent my country and see how far I can go.I actually enjoy the pressure. It keeps things exciting.”
With focus and heart, Oliver Delport is chasing his dreams and showing us all what it means to go the distance. He is raising funds to get to Australia; you can support his efforts here.
