The happiness on his face says it all. Moeggesukkel has shown up for Oom Shorty in the most incredible ways over the years!
South Africa (29 June 2026) – At 62 years old, Oom Shorty recently enjoyed a visit to Spur for the very first time in his life.
He had never tried the famous pink sauce, never heard the birthday song, and had never experienced what so many South Africans see as an ordinary family outing. For the first time ever, he had three different kinds of meat on one plate.
“One of the most beautiful moments of my life. I had the privilege of taking Uncle Shorty to Spur…” shared Moeggesukkel. “It was so much more than just a meal. It was an experience. A moment frozen in time that I will never forget.”
The surprise was organised by Moeggesukkel, a group that has been standing by Oom Shorty and his wife since meeting them in 2023.
Over the past few years, they’ve helped in wonderful ways that have made a big difference to their lives, while Oom Shorty has worked hard to provide for his family. He earns a living collecting recyclable materials and has travelled thousands kilometres over the years to do so.
When Moeggesukkel gave him a bicycle, he adapted it by attaching a trailer so he could collect more recycling each day.
Seeing his determination, the team later surprised him with a custom-built trailer to help him even further. They also replaced his broken cellphone and built him and his wife a wooden home, giving them a safer place to live during heavy rain.
Most recently, they helped him tick something else off the list. For the first time in 62 years, Oom Shorty had his eyes tested and received a pair of prescription glasses. Until then, he had never owned glasses made for his eyes. Instead, he would collect discarded pairs from rubbish bins and try them on, hoping to find one that helped him see a little better.
Just days later came his surprise visit to Spur. Oom Shorty’s excitement, gratitude and appreciation have become familiar to the those who have followed his journey over the past few years.
