This holiday season, why not choose to be present, mindful, and intentional in your interactions with your children? Gadgets and games are cool – but fostering deeper connections and creating lasting memories can truly strengthen family bonds and bring so much more happiness!
Johannesburg, South Africa (19 December 2024) – As we wrap up another demanding year, it’s tempting to surrender to exhaustion and default to ‘survival mode.’
Parents, we know many of you have had it hard! Navigating the chaos of business, work, school, and endless responsibilities can make the holiday season feel like the final sprint. But, during the festive frenzy, it’s important not to forget the most precious gift bestowed upon many of us: our children.
It’s easy to get caught up in entertaining them with gadgets, games, and screen time, but Early Childhood Development Specialist Norleen Zulu says this holiday season presents a unique opportunity for something much more profound.
“Meaningful engagement with our children can be the greatest gift we give them, and by extension, ourselves.
“Prioritising quality time with your children during the holidays is crucial for their development, your relationship, and your own well-being,” Zulu explains.
Sure, the latest iPad, iPhone or PlayStation games are awesome. But beyond entertaining kids with tech and gadgets, it is also important to try to build deeper connections and create lasting memories and a stronger family bond.
Go outside and play, build a puzzle, cook with them, and explore the environment and its abundance of natural gems. The list is endless – and not as complicated as you might think. This holiday season is the perfect time to reconnect and rediscover the joy of parenting.
“Meaningful engagement is pivotal to your children’s emotional development and this goes beyond entertainment. It encompasses the purposeful, significant and fulfilling activities that lead to a deeper connection with your child.
“This may mean temporarily packing away the electronic gadgets and getting down and dirty with things that involve active participation, attention and spiking their interest while giving a lasting impact,” Zulu advises.
Zulu further explains that shallow interactions with the kids just don’t cut it. Spending hours “together” scrolling through your phones, indulging in quick fixes like fast food outings and excessive gaming provides only temporary convenience and entertainment but lacks substance and ultimately leaves our relationships feeling hollow and unfulfilling.
So, consider trading the TV and social media for some reading time together or just an intentional bonding session. Seize the opportunity to connect!
“This time of the year is fantastic as a lot of us spend time buying gifts for each other and other people – maybe this year we could opt for hand-made gifts, pop into the art store with your children and buy supplies to make gifts and gift wrap. As we do this we can openly discuss our family values.
“Let’s engage in open conversations about family identity and morals to foster creativity and thoughtfulness, love, unity, kindness, and gratitude. Numerous activities can be adopted to help us establish more meaningful and purposeful interactions with our children,” Zulu encourages.
And lastly, before you rush out to the toy shop to buy your next gift, maybe consider that what you may truly need this holiday is some good old fun or a getaway from the hustle and bustle of this busy world so that you can be present for your children.
