Wherever you see tragedy, you see bravery too, where you see ordinary people in need, you see extraordinary ordinary people come to their aid. Where there is bad, there is always good. In times of sadness, always look for the helpers… because they will always be there!
Johannesburg, South Africa (12 December 2021) – Good is going to win. It has to.
Times have obviously got harder, and people are nervous and fearful. The last two years have been incredibly tragic, filled with unprecedented upheaval, solitude and hardships.
Like 2020, 2021 has been heavily defined by the COVID-19 pandemic, especially due to the emergence of multiple new variants. But it hasn’t just been about the coronavirus and the rapidly rising numbers. Tragedy has been everywhere.
I mean, the year started with America storming the capital. Table Mountain was set alight. Daft Punk broke up. Prince Philip passed away. Riots and looting took over our country. Schitt’s Creek ended. Loadshedding is still here, and for some reason, Zuma is still running around as a free man.
But let’s look at the other side of the coin; the good things.
Small communities started supporting each other to combat food insecurity. Taylor Swift’s new “old” album is an absolute cracker. Monarch Butterfly populations have bounced back from the edge of extinction. The new season of Ted Lasso is flipping brilliant. China eliminated Malaria. The Kardashians finished filming their reality series… FOREVER! And South Africa has won more awards this year than we know what to do with.
Also, there are really good humans who remind us how beautiful our country is every single day.
Wherever you see tragedy, you see bravery too, where you see ordinary people in need, you see extraordinary ordinary people come to their aid. Where there is bad, there is always good. In times of sadness, always look for the helpers… because they will always be there!
Right now – today – some South Africans are giving their time and energy and hard-earned cash to people who they’ll never meet but whose pain and fear they feel and want to fight; a reminder that people are inherently good, and there is still so much kindness and love in the world.
So yes, good is going to win. I’m actually sure of it.
