The South African Police Service (SAPS) has been making massive busts all over the country this week and it is welcome news! These are the top stories.
There have been some massive drug busts and poaching arrests this past week all thanks to the valiant efforts made by the SAPS. Just two days ago we shared a story that the SAPS had launched a new campaign to fight crime in South Africa. The fruits are already baring.
These are some of the top arrests that have been made so far this week.
Drug Kingpin arrested in Durban
A Durban Whoonga Kingpin has been arrested in an undercover sting operation. The man in question has been supplying hard drugs to hundreds of addicts which led to a spike in crime within the Durban Metro. By nabbing the dealer and confiscating R40,000 in drugs, there will be far less on the streets.
“The operation led to the arrest of a Kenyan male identified as a dealer. He was found in possession of 40 pieces of rock cocaine, 11 large pieces of rock cocaine, one large plastic packet of heroin powder, 141 plastic wrappings of heroin and R240 in cash,” – Senior Superintendent Parboo Sewpersad, Durban Metro Police spokesperson
In an effort to control addiction in South Africa, the government are paying more attention to treatment as well as getting dealers and drugs off the streets. Just recently, a new facility was opened in Johannesburg. The ceremony was attended by Joburg Mayor, Herman Mashaba.
Two Poaching Kingpins arrested in Gauteng
The Hawks arrested two big players in the Rhino Poaching world. The men arrested are believed to be high-ranking members of a poaching ring that operates near the Kruger National Park. These efforts paid off after a two-year operation between multiple law departments and SANParks.
“We made a paradigm shift in wildlife trafficking and the whole supply chain,”
“These specific persons have recruited people to obtain rhino horn, then they will pay a high price for the horn that will be received by the two or three runners working for them and from there they will supply end-user markets,” – Hawks’ Colonel Johan Jooste
Corrupt JMPD Officer arrested in Johannesburg
The top cops have even been rooting out their own corrupted officers, arresting an off-duty JMPD officer for soliciting a bribe and other illegal behaviours.
“The Chief of Police Mr David Tembe welcomes the arrest of the officer as bribery and corruption defeats all the efforts of fighting lawlessness and restoring Law and Order. This is a strong warning to all the Metro Police officers who are involved in criminal activities as the department has no room for corruption”
99 People arrested in Joburg for various crimes
Over the weekend, a total of 99 arrests were made in various parts of Johannesburg. The suspects were arrested for various crimes.
