On June 12, 2016, a man walked into an Orlando nightclub, opened fire, and killed 49 people.
Lady Gaga and Chris Pine are the first two of 49 famous faces seen in a memorial video put out Wednesday by the Human Rights Campaign to Stop the Hate, in remembrance of 49 people killed in the June 12 shooting at Orlando’s Pulse nightclub.
One by one, the celebrities – many of them professionally affiliated with Ryan Murphy, whose production company put together the hypnotic piece – share names, ages and a wide range of details about each of the victims who died on Latin night at the gay club.
Many questions from that night remain. Namely: Why? Why them? Why that night? The question of “who,” however — that’s something we know. We know who the shooter was, and we know who the victims are.
A new video hopes to shine a light on stories of the victims of the Pulse nightclub massacre.
Produced by the Human Rights Campaign and Ryan Murphy (“Glee,” “American Horror Story”), the 18-minute film aims to keep the memories alive of those lost and ensure they did not die in vain.
“For too long, a toxic combination of anti-LGBTQ hate and easy access to guns has put LGBTQ people at disproportionate risk of violence and murder,” HRC says in the description with the video on YouTube.
“It’s time to stop the bleeding,” Gaga says in wrapping up the video, followed by Pine, saying: “Let’s show the world that love conquers hate.” The video ends with a contact-your-legislators call to action in support of gun control and hate-crime laws.
For the names of all who died, put aside 18 minutes and watch the sobering video.
“It’s on all of us to keep their memories alive, and to ensure part of their legacy becomes meaningful action to end hate violence.”
