Use your time wisely. Spend it on good things. Make it count.

Johannesburg, South Africa (30 April 2022) – On Wednesday, I went to a 70th birthday where I knew no one… not even the birthday girl.

This might sound strange, but it was actually such a beautiful afternoon. And something I will treasure forever. Time well spent. A gift.

I received an email a couple of weeks ago from someone I didn’t know inviting me to her mom’s birthday lunch. This is not a strange occurrence; if I showed you some of the stuff I get sent, you would giggle, be disgusted and confused.

But not this time… it was a simple request, and something in my soul said go!

“I know this is strange, but it’s been a rough two years, and my mom loves Good Things Guy, and she is turning 70, and we would love to have you over for lunch.”

I mean, they had me at “we can pay you in gin and champagne”. Obvs.

I agreed without quite knowing what I was getting myself into. Good grief, another unprecedented event. I thought we were done with these?!

I arrived at a beautiful home in Bryanston. A massive table for 30 had been set outside on the patio adorned with pink tulips, strawberry dahlias and magenta roses. A bar adjacent was filled to the brim, with a massive outside lounge in the middle. The scene was set for a perfect birthday lunch.

I arrived early, so guests started streaming in… one by one, a group of ladies all here to celebrate Margaret. Ja, I was not only a stranger at this lunch but also the only man. Imagine. I knew no one, and most did not know me.

The lunch was spectacular. Sandy’s Caterers kept the food and drinks flowing. Time spent perfectly.

I got to chat with most of the ladies. My job? To bring a little happiness. Some good things. A reminder that even though the last two years have been absolutely traumatic, there were little glimmers of hope and magnificence that we can and should celebrate.

There was laughter, joy and happiness all around the table. We chatted about cooking, good news, woolies bags, loadshedding, friends, family and time.

Time seemed to be a theme amongst this incredible group of women. They sat sharing stories of things they had done and lives they had lived. Time.

I stepped out of my comfort zone and leaned in on Wednesday when I went to a birthday lunch with 29 random strangers. I spent the afternoon in the spectacular autumn sun, drinking champagne while listening to incredible women sharing stories of their time. It was beautiful. And a stark reminder that we only have so much time.

It was Alice in Wonderland who said time was a thief. But it gives before it takes. Time is a gift. Every minute. Every second.

We need to lean in. We need to say yes to more adventures. We need to step out of our comfort zones. We need to be living every minute… every second. Don’t ever take time for granted. Right now is all we have, so please, PLEASE don’t spend a second of it worrying, or unhappy, or sad.

Use your time wisely. Spend it on good things. Make it count.

Okay. Love you. Bye.
