Organisation works to promote 'the forgotten' dogs left in various shelters

Every animal shelter has one or two very long-term residents that end up spending most of their lives waiting to be adopted; the Husky Rescue SA is working to change this.

Johannesburg, South Africa – The Husky Rescue SA organisation has launched a fantastic campaign which will help bring awareness to not only their long-term residents but to all those sitting in shelters that are overlooked.

The #TheForgotten Campaign asks people looking to adopt a shelter animal, to consider adopting a long-term resident.

“Joan and the team at Husky Rescue South Africa truly love and care for all the dogs in our care, but what we would love is for them to go to forever homes!

We are launching #TheForgotten campaign to highlight our long-term resident dogs that have been continuously overlooked, through no fault of their own. Most of these dogs have now been with us for over three years, some longer.” – Christine Bennie

The organisation knows that the animals are overlooked at no fault of their own. What is needed is a change in opinion about older dogs. Many families will look to adopt a puppy over a fully grown, elderly dog. By highlighting their long-term resident’s stories, the Husky Rescue group hope to reignite interest in the dogs.

“There are many reasons that some dogs get overlooked. Some of our dogs have had a particularly hard start in life and have behavioural quirks, needing to be single dogs or go as bonded pairs. Sometimes they are a little nervous around strangers and need extra TLC and attention to adjust to a new home. Other times they are judged because of their breed (some of our dogs are Husky cross or just honorary Huskies); and believe it or not, Huskies with brown eyes are less popular than those with blue eyes.

And sadly, senior dogs are often overlooked; while they may be greying at the muzzle or a bit slower they are still filled with love and devotion. Rescue dogs fill your heart without trying – all you have to do is give them a chance!”

The organisation knows there is someone special out there waiting for each and every one of these dogs. They are asking that people help to find them and share #TheForgotten stories.
