If you visit Emmarentia Dam often enough, there’s a chance you might spot an otter!
Emmarentia Dam, Johannesburg Botanical Gardens (03 September 2025) – Rumour has it that an otter has taken up residence at Joburg’s Emmarentia Dam at the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens!
One local took to a community group to share the news after spotting the otter late on an afternoon walk.
Otters aren’t strangers to Joburg, but seeing one out and about in broad daylight is still rare. Normally, they stick to rivers and wetlands, keeping a low profile. But some of these clever guys have learned to live alongside us as urban otters.
They’re fascinating little characters. The ones we find around these parts don’t rely on claws like other otter species, their front feet are clawless, perfect for digging around for food underwater. They can hold their breath for minutes at a time, and their thick fur keeps them warm without needing a layer of blubber like seals do.
Basically, they’re built for both land and water, and for stealing the spotlight when they do decide to show themselves. Generally, their presence is a sign that the water ecosystem is healthy.
These little guys are naturally smart and playful, with bigger brains than you’d expect for their size. This natural curiosity helps them adjust to new places, which is why urban otters have figured out how to turn park dams, ponds, and stormwater drains into good homes.
If you do happen to spot an otter, there are some things you should know.
You should definitely snap up a photo or video, while keeping your distance (don’t cramp its style). However, don’t feed the otter, and if you’re walking your dog and notice one nearby, don’t let pooch off the leash. You will be putting your doggy at risk, and the otter too.
