The Animal Anti-Cruelty League in Ladysmith faced severe flooding on Christmas Eve; they are hoping to rebuild lost kennels and build another cattery.

Ladysmith, South Africa (18 January 2024) – The Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL) in Ladysmith has faced some troubles with flooding and needs to replace dog kennels and build another cattery on its premises. On the 24th of December 2023, the animal welfare charity was flooded.

The community rushed to aid the organisation, giving up their Christmases to make sure the animals were safe. Pauline Lennon, the manager and inspector at the Ladysmith AACL branch shared that the water levels were incredibly high.

“We have a great community that helps when they can, and when we had the floods on the night of 24th December there where many people that came to help; in one of the Kennels the water was over a metre deep and it came all the way up to the office and that was about half a metre deep.”

Financial constraints have prevented them from replacing the dog kennels or getting started on the cattery. Herself and three staff members take care of animals brought in from Van Reenen, Rooseboom Colenso, Elandslaagte Ladysmith and Ezakheni.

“We care for injured and stray dogs and cats. We also offer Boarding facilities which bring in some income.

We take in stray dogs and cats. People that are moving and can’t take their animals dump them with us.
The municipality also brings in strays to us.”

The Ladysmith AACL focuses on education as a priority. Pauline visits local schools, giving talks on pet care and the importance of sterilisation and getting pets vaccinated. They work closely with all the local vets and state vets, helping guide people when to treat ailments or seek help from the standby vet in Estcourt

“We have 21 Kennels and 2 catteries. and at times we can have up to 47 dogs at a time. So its a juggling job to fit them all in. We are in need of more kennels etc.” – Pauline Lennon
