An eight-year-old from Montrose Primary School has started his own charity, collecting and distributing socks to the needy.

Aaron Greenblatt is a 8 year old who wants nothing more than to help those in need. Aaron has noticed that there is a shortage of items donated… Socks. Aaron has taken initiative in trying to gather socks for people of all ages. We often forget that these simple items we take for granted are needed by those who do not have these basic necessities.

Aptly named “Aaron rock your socks”, the initiative was launched off the back of Sole2Sole, an effort by Dario Gouveia, Lead SA Youth Hero for March, who collected over 4 000 pairs of shoes.

Lee Greenblatt, Aaron’s mom says that the initiative was started by Aaron himself and all they have done, is support him in his efforts. Lee said that his initial goal was to collect 1 000 pairs of socks but to date, he’s collected more than 10 000 pairs of socks.

“When he heard about Dario Sole2Sole Charity, he asked me, what about socks Mom? How can people have shoes but no socks?”

His school, Montrose Primary School has also taken up the challenge and started a “Sock Day” to help support him.

“We have donated to a wide range of charities and organisations who have made contact with us and one of Aaron’s favourite spots is Dukes Soccer Club from Alexandra Township,” said Lee. They hand out on a daily basis to needy people as they see them.

Aaron said he will continue with the project for the entire year and in summer they can collect school socks.

“I have lots of friends who have given me socks and my friend Maliyah from school came with me to give socks to babies. That was a lot of fun and she enjoyed herself,” he said.

Aaron said that one of the biggest challenges he faces is not having enough time to go to all the handouts, so his mother sometimes delivers the socks for him. “We always need more and more socks!”
