The Adopt a Cot initiative makes it simpler than ever to show love to vulnerable babies who most need it. Here’s how it works!

Somerset West, South Africa (10 February 2025) — There’s a super simple way to help positively benefit the future of a vulnerable baby in the Western Cape. If you haven’t heard of the Adopt a Cot initiative before, this is what it’s all about:

Heartlands Baby Sanctuary has cared for over 420 children since it first opened its doors in 2015, offering a safe haven for little tots that have faced unimaginable struggles in their short lifetimes, including neglect, abuse and being orphaned.

At the safe haven, little ones aged 0-6 are given necessary care and support—from their nutritional needs to psychosocial help.

As much as we’d all adore it if love and kindness alone could pay the bills, there are many costs to cover in ensuring that these children receive a fighting chance at a healthier, happier life backed by a better foundation.

Cue the Adopt a Cot Initiative!

A way to connect those with the means to those with the mission, the Adopt a Cot initiative is a way for people to play their part in making a Heartlands tot’s future much brighter.

The public is invited to donate a small monthly debit order or a once-off donation (tax-deductible) that will then go towards one of the Heartlands’ little ones to support their time at the temporary home.

The cot in question refers to three pillars of care—psychosocial, health and development. The monthly cost per cot sees figures like R550 (nutritious meals), R700 (milk formulas) and R350 (disposable nappies) along with higher figures that pay for social workers and supporting staff.

Considering that Heartlands’ requires around 2,500 nappies per month and up to 80 bottles of milk per day, it’s easy to understand why every cot that’s adopted (virtually supported) is part of a much bigger ecosystem of hope.

Not to mention, Heartlands is celebrating its 10th birthday this year, so what better way to make it a wonderful one?

Those wishing to get involved can do so here. P.S: As part of the charity’s birthday, your R100 per month debit order could see you become the lucky winner of a R10,000 prize in December!
