The uniquely challenging journeys of Khaka Nyiba, Jennifer-Rose Beukes, and Thembikazi Sisilana are living proof that success isn’t always a straight line. Sometimes, it’s a series of restarts, U-turns, and the courage to try just one more time.

Western Cape, South Africa (23 April 2026) – Starting over, persevering through hardship, and returning to finish what was once begun are all bold acts of strength, resilience, and determination. These are the very qualities displayed by three inspiring University of the Western Cape (UWC) graduates, each of whom navigated a uniquely challenging path to reach their academic goals.

Khaka Nyiba’s journey reflected the quiet power of choosing to begin again. After poor matric results, he stepped away from school entirely. For many, that moment could have marked the end, but for Khaka, it became a turning point.

“Instead of giving up, I chose to learn from it and keep pushing forward,” he said.

Over the next four years, he started over and rebuilt not only his academic record but his sense of purpose. His growth extended beyond marks, finding meaning in helping others as a maths tutor.

This week, his graduation represented more than achievement – it became proof that setbacks do not have to define your future.

Another fellow graduate who walked the stage this week, Jennifer-Rose Beukes, holds a story of responsibility carried long before success was achieved.

Raised in a single-parent household, she understood early that her path would require more than personal ambition.

“Academic success became my priority…not just as a goal, but as a responsibility,” said Beukes.

Her university experience brought uncertainty in the form of financial strain, academic pressure and the weight of expectation. When her mother fell ill during her first year, the burden intensified. Jennifer was no longer just a student, but a pillar within her home.

“There were days when exhaustion, stress and fear tried to convince me to give up,” she said.

Yet she continued, grounded in something deeper than circumstance. Three years later, she has crossed the stage as the first in her family to do so!

“I made it. Not because the journey was easy, but because I refused to quit.”

For Thembekazi Sisilana, the academic journey was longer than most, spanning nearly two decades.

Beginning her studies in 2008, she faced immediate financial strain.

“I needed to work on weekends… to save up for registration fees,” said Thembekazi.

And even after she had enrolled, daily survival often took priority over academic focus. She was constantly stressed about money for travel or money for food. Eventually, the pressure forced her to step away for 15 years.

But that wasn’t the end of her story. Thembekazi returned to her studies with renewed purpose.

“I was able to fully show up for myself.”

Now graduating at 37, her journey is one of resilience, timing and accomplishment.

“It is finally my turn,” she said, beaming with pride.

With their degrees finally in hand, Khakha, Jennifer, and Thembikazi stand as inspiring examples of what is possible when you choose to go against the grain – no matter how difficult the path or how long the wait. They have proven that progress is rarely linear, that perseverance pays off, and that picking up where you left off can pave the way for your greatest comeback.

Congratulations to each of these incredible UWC graduates!
