The story of a nine-year-old boy named Alondwe Ngwenya, who faced immense challenges due to a severe case of cystic hygroma, has reached a beautiful turning point. Not only has he received his long-awaited surgery and begun recovery, but his future is brimming with the promise of better days, and it’s all thanks to the kindness of those who refused to let him face another day without hope.
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (03 July 2025) – If you happen to be a regular Good Things Guy reader, you may remember the touching story of Alondwe Ngwenya, a nine-year-old child, born with a severe case of cystic hygroma.
His condition had caused significant swelling on his face and foot, making everyday tasks difficult.
Alondwe’s story and condition were widely shared and touched the hearts of those who were moved to help this young boy overcome a long and disheartening journey. At the heart of Alondwe’s long-awaited turning point was the Angel Network Durban, which spearheaded a call to action to support Alonde and his mother.
Nearly three months later, this special young man has finally received the surgery he has so desperately been waiting for.
“We are so grateful that this gentle yet determined young boy, Alondwe, had a successful 5-hour operation and is on his way to recovery,” shared The Angel Network’s Rachel Kinloch.
Now on the road to recovery, a life filled with fun with friends, engaging in classroom learning, and daring to dream big is within his grasp, free from the confines of physical discomfort.
Rachel further extended heartfelt thanks to everyone who held Alondwe in their heart and helped in any way.
“Special thanks go to the wonderful teams at Netcare Umhlanga and Albert Luthuli hospitals for all that they did to make this happen! We can’t wait to watch this young man grow and thrive,” she added.
A young man, who once carried a burden of pain no child or adult should know, is now on a new chapter. A chapter which holds the promise of better days, continued healing, newfound confidence and the freedom to simply be, and it has all been made possible by the incredible power of kindness and the life-changing impact of a community coming together to rewrite his story.
