The nine-year-old who has captured the nation’s hearts,  Alondwe Ngwenya, is making great progress following his surgery, bringing him closer to hopes of growing up without pain, playing freely and one day stepping into a courtroom as a lawyer.

Durban, South Africa (19 October 2025) – Born with a severe case of cystic hygroma, Alondwe Ngwenya’s story started on a disheartening note, carrying a weight no child should have to bear, both literally and figuratively.

Good Things Guy first shared about the nine-year-old’s brave battle in March this year and has since followed his touching journey that has seen remarkable organisations like The Angel Network Durban, medical teams at Netcare Umhlanga and Albert Luthuli hospitals, as well as everyday people rally to get Alondwe the surgery he deserved.

Through public support and generosity, Alondwe received his surgery in June, and the Angel Network Durban team, which has been with him all the way, was pleased to share that he is healing well!

“We’re overjoyed to share that brave little Alondwe is making amazing progress! He can now walk on both feet and proudly wear closed shoes again, such a beautiful milestone! His facial cyst has healed wonderfully and is much smaller.”

The charity confirmed that his next operation is scheduled for February next year.

“We’re so grateful to everyone who’s supported him along the way.”

As Alondwe heals physically, not only can he begin to cast off the burdens that weighed him down, but he can also look toward the future, with prospects like finishing primary school and one day becoming the lawyer he’s always dreamed of.

South Africans who have been following Alondwe’s story have responded with outpouring love and support, praising his bravery and those who have stood beside him. As Angela Good puts it:

“This is wonderful news. Keep going, Alondwe. You’ve got this.”

While another person commented:

“That is so amazing. So, life-changing for him!”

We wish Alondwe all the best as he continues to defy the odds, inspire us all and find healing.
