The Cluny Animal Trust was alerted to two cases of rabies within communities they support; they quickly initiated a vaccination drive to address any further cases.
Fouriesburg, South Africa (20 September 2022) – Acting fast saves lives and so does vaccination, which is why the Cluny Animal Trust based in Clarens, Free State jumped into action to address two cases of rabies. The team work tirelessly to keep the communities and pets in their care, fully vaccinated.
The fast-acting efforts make all the difference, especially in smaller, remote communities. Through collaboration with the state vet, 378 cats and dogs got updated vaccinations against all the ugly bugs that affect animals.
“In the last couple of weeks, we alerted the community to 2 positive cases of Rabies, one just outside of Fouriesburg on the road to Bethlehem and the other (more recent one) right in the heart of Mashaeng, the township area of Fouriesburg. This really stings as we work tirelessly in this area but of course there are always animals that will fall through the cracks because their owners just don’t understand the importance of vaccination.”
“So, we have spent the last week co-ordinating with the State Vet from Bethlehem, who yesterday was in Fouriesburg proper, they were open between 10am and 2pm and then Jan, Nico and volunteer Dr Suzanne from the Cluny team were set-up in Mashaeng, all in all we vaccinated 378 dogs and cats against Rabies yesterday!”
Rabies is a fatal but preventable disease and is known to kill humans too. In the Free State, the disease is classed as endemic which is why Cluny take it so seriously.
