For the mothers who feed their dogs before themselves, and the elders who share their only blanket with their cats; Animal Welfare Society of SA is going beyond just medical treatment, focusing on a mission of compassion for all.
Cape Town, South Africa (10 July 2025) – When adversity seeks to break us down, companionship and compassion can transcend even in the toughest of times.
The Animal Welfare Society of SA (AWS) has witnessed this firsthand: families struggling, elders alone, children growing up in poverty and right there with them their beloved animals, often their only source of comfort in times of hardship.
Through the organisation’s critical work to support animals in great need, volunteers have encountered the often-overlooked reality that animal welfare cannot be separated from human welfare in underserved communities.
“It’s all connected, and in these moments, our work becomes more than just veterinary care—it becomes a mission of compassion for all.
“We’ve seen mothers feed their dogs before themselves. Elders share their only blanket with their cats. Teenagers walk for miles, carrying their puppies, just to reach our hospital,” AWS shares.

The charity has been working tirelessly to support families and their furbabies and recently received a generous donation of food and blankets from the Humane World for Animals South Africa to continue this invaluable support and extend its reach.
“We don’t just show up for animals. We show up for their people, too. We listen. We care. We do what we can—with your help,” AWS said.
AWS appeals for continued support and donations to help feed, rescue, and care for more lives in need — both human and animal.
“Your support means the world to both paws and people.”
