Robot Gift

When one birthday girl fighting cancer had a unique robot gift at the top of her wish list, charity Rainbows and Smiles quickly learned that finding a real unicorn might’ve been easier. Then, something incredible happened…

Gauteng, South Africa (29 January 2025) — We all know the pressure of wanting to get someone the perfect gift that’s just too far out of reach. These sorts of gifts—special and unique as they may be—are a sure day-maker when we manage to hunt them down. However, the quests they come along with are certainly not for the faint of heart.

Such was the situation that the childhood cancer support organisation Rainbows and Smiles found itself in recently.

A community-based, charitable foundation dedicated to providing emotional, social and financial support to children diagnosed with cancer or a life-threatening illness as well as their families and caregivers, Rainbows and Smiles has never been afraid of going the extra mile.

When it came to one little girl’s birthday wish that saw her daydreaming about receiving a very specific robot toy, the charity soon realised that the robot in question was no easy find. Despite great lengths of searching, the team discovered that this ‘shop’ was equivalent to finding a needle in a haystack or tracking a real unicorn.

Not giving up, Rainbows and Smiles reached out to their local supporters to see if anyone knew where the gift could be found.

When the team received a call that a supporter had found the robot and that they could come collect it, they could’ve leapt over the moon.

But, the happy surprises didn’t end there.

The wonderful wizard who managed to find the item didn’t just cop the treasure and call it a day. Instead, they did something even more akin to magic.

To the team’s greatest gratitude, the robot came with a crew of other gifts; all of which would evoke the biggest birthday girl smile ever.

“These photos speak a thousand words. She was so excited. I’m sure she could feel the love that came with these gifts,” Rainbows and Smiles shared.

“Thank you to our amazing ‘unicorn finder; supporter for making this spoil possible and making the day of a brave cancer warrior.”
