A women’s self protection organisation inspired by warrior Alison Botha, Women InPowered, is preparing to break a world record and the biggest board ever later this month!

Pretoria, South Africa (10 November 2024) — Ahead of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence, a women’s self-protection organisation inspired by none other than South African warrior Alison Botha, is preparing to do something record-breaking.

Women Inpowered was founded on the idea that South African women need to know not only how to defend themselves, but how to have the confidence to do so in moments it matters most. The reality is that GBV is its own pandemic in our country—a reality none of us can ignore. While we must hold men accountable and teach young boys to break what’s often a generational cycle of abuse, we must also empower women as much as possible to know that we are not helpless.

In an effort to stand in solidarity against GBV and raise funds for Women INPowered’s work, the team are preparing to break the world record for the largest simultaneous board break!

They are planning to smash over 1,000 boards; of which the funds will be channeled to their defence training programmes that will empower 10,000 women in 2025.

“While we recognise that we may not completely eliminate GBV, we believe that through collective action, we can combat it daily, raise awareness, and empower individuals,” share the team.

As such, the world record attempt isn’t just a demonstration of strength, it’s a call for a nation to unlock our collective strength against GBV while breaking history in the process.

At present, the biggest board break to date involves around 300 martial artists. The Women Inpowered squad aim to have over 1000 martial artists at their board-breaking event!

The big break is set to take place on Thursday, 21 November from 9am to 12pm in Pretoria. Marital artists, supporters of women’s rights and everyone who believes in a better South Africa for women is invited to join the event.
