Trace Van Der Merwe’s business is alcohol related which means he cannot work for the next two weeks; he is using this time to support the KZN police force through the riots.
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (13 July 2021) – Trace Van Der Merwe owns Thirst Bar Services which is restricted from operating during the current lockdown level 4. Despite his own hardships, he decided to stand up and assist the South African Police Services operating in Durban, KZN.
Trace filled the back of his bakkie with coolerboxes and has been handing out cold drinks to the police officers monitoring the rioting and looting.
Trace’s mother-in-law shared the story on her Facebook page and it is quickly being shared because of the positive light is shines on these dark times.
“My son in law, Trace Van Der Merwe, owns Thirst Bar Services company in Durban, KZN, which can’t trade anyway, so he has just driven around dropping off cold drinks for first responders to the present public violence, as no shops are open for them to buy themselves a cold drink or water and they’ve been on duty since early – all finding ways to help.” – Lynley Clarke
Our favourit quote, and one we will probably repeat several times in the weeks to come is this; “In times of tragedy, look for the helpers; they will always be there” – Fred Rogers.
