A caregiver finishing her practicals at a local hospice formed a deep connection with two patients. Wanting to leave them with a comforting farewell gift, she reached out to her community, and the response was just heartwarming!
Johannesburg, South Africa (22 April 2025) – When the work we do connects us to people who not only touch our souls but also inspire us to give back, it creates a truly rewarding life experience.
Jallet Patience had been doing her 40-day caregiver practicals at a local hospice when she found herself bonding with two patients at the facility.
They made a lasting impression on her during her time at the hospice that she couldn’t help but reach out to the I Love Fourways Facebook Group, asking the community for suggestions on farewell gifts that could bring comfort to these patients as her practicals at the Hospice were coming to an end.
It wasn’t long before Beanies for Beings’ Megan Botha came across the post and didn’t hesitate to lend a hand.
Upon learning that the hospice had eight patients in total, Megan and her trusted team gathered warm blankets, knitted items and toiletries to pack into care packs to bless the patients.
“There was a lot of love put into these packs, and I know that a lot of love was poured into the knitted and crocheted blankets and beanies made by our wonderful volunteer knitting and crocheting community,” shares Megan.
Relying on public transport, Jallet also went through a lot of trouble to travel from Kempton Park to the Beanies for Beings office in Northriding, demonstrating her dedication and care to the patients who greatly impacted her journey as a caregiver.
Megan, moved by Jallet’s compassion, described it as more than just a story of gifting care packs; it was a testimony to the dedication, love, and care so many caregivers have for their patients.
“It’s a tangible sharing and gifting of kindness and compassion, it’s love in action and it’s a lesson in being present, being available and in being seen and heard.”
Touched by the support from the charity’s contributions, Jallet said:
“I can’t thank you enough for coming through Megan, you enveloped my journey at the hospice amazingly. May the universe revolve favourably for you.”
