Cashier pays for groceries after clients card declines… restores faith in all South Africans!

A cashier offered to pay for groceries after a customer’s card declined… but her simple, generous gesture is so much bigger than that!

Somerset West, South Africa – Just a little over a month ago, a petrol attendant went viral after giving a woman R100’s fuel to get home, and it seems that his act of kindness continues to inspire other South Africans to help each other out too!

On the 3rd of July 2019, Brandon Britz visited his local Food Lovers Market in Somerset West to pick up his monthly groceries, but his card declined. Nolitha (surname withheld for privacy purposes) was working at the cashier station when she asked Brandon if she could try swipe the card again.

“After the cashier had rung all my items up, my total came to almost R1300.00. She swiped my card but it just kept on declining”.

This went on for a while before Brandon asked her to please wait a moment as he would draw the money from the nearest ATM, but that too did not process and kept giving him an error message. As a last resort, the shopper tried to transfer money to a friend who was with him, so that he could pay for the groceries, but again the same error message came up.

Nolitha had been watching him and could see that he was quite frustrated. It was then that she approached him and offered to pay the full amount – as it was quite late in the evening – and suggested that he take the food now and come back the next day to repay her.

Brandon had never visited that store before, nor had he ever met Nolitha, but in that one brief moment, he had seen a side of humanity that nearly brought him to tears.

He thanked Nolitha, gave her all of his contact details and went home to unpack his groceries.

Brandon went back the next day to pay her but couldn’t stop thinking about how good-hearted and trusting she was, for no other reason than just being kind.

“I went back to pay her at lunchtime where we both started crying, I couldn’t believe someone would do that”.

He immediately contacted Backabuddy and is in the process of raising funds to thank her.

“This goes to show that there are great people out there and I would like to pay it forward by starting a donation for her!

My goal is to get roughly a monthly salary for her, which is R6000. I have donated R1000 of my money, and I’m sure she would appreciate any small donations, she is truly South African Hero, and I hope she becomes famous!

Many thank Nolitha you are a legend!”
