The Glam Girls Charity Drive started as a breakfast amongst friends who brought gift bags filled with toiletries for young people in need. 15 years later and that breakfast still happens every year—except with a lot more friends and a lot more glam bags!
Pretoria, South Africa (12 November 2024) — Years ago, a group of friends gathered over breakfast with toiletry-filled gift bags. These gifts weren’t for each other. Instead, they were for young women who needed them and a sense of dignity far more. Fast-forward to today, and that simple idea, inspired by a little extra kindness, celebrates fifteen years of difference-making as the Glam Girls Charity Drive.
Glam Girls Charity Drive is proud to say that it has been helping both underprivileged girls and boys with the essentials of self-worth, reaching hundreds of young people across South Africa!
True to its roots, the Glam Girls Charity Drive happens in the form of a breakfast every year, where groups of friends come together with their glam bags, hopes for better chances for the next generation and kindness.
This community is bonded through the belief that living in an underprivileged area should never mean that young people and children should go without the basic necessities. Necessities that help them feel good about themselves and instil a sense of self-value.
“Even though our bags are not toys, but much-needed toiletries, believe me, it puts a huge smile on these children’s faces as it is their only Christmas gift,” shares initiative founder Karen Hall.
Beyond just the essentials, many of the Glam Girls also write a little letter to the gift-receiver, making the effort that much more touching.
“Probably the most important item in the bag is the little letter I encourage all ladies to write, because every child deserves to know tht they are loved, special and worthy, and a small gesture like this can really make a huge difference in their lives.
“A small act of kindness can go a long way in making a big difference in a young person’s life,” Karen says.
This year’s breakfast was held last weekend in Pretoria, where 87 bags were collected and distributed to the youth through Children of the Dawn, an NPO who work in impoverished areas in 5 provinces.
