Chefs with Compassion passed the assignment with flying colours, feeding 400 000 people on Nelson Mandela Day! With over 100 000 litres of soup served, they’ve also broken their own record — simply souperb!

South Africa (19 July, 2023)—Chefs with Compassion has done it again by cooking up a storm of change for Nelson Mandela Day. 67 000 Litres might seem like an overly ambitious soup mission, but these chefs have proved time and time again that when you have kindness and community as your leading ingredients, nothing is impossible.

This year Chefs with Compassion not only outdid themselves by surpassing their 67 000 litres goal, they also cooked up the most litres ever by breaking their own record with 104 360 litres achieved. Their previous serving to beat was in 2022 with 90 679 litres.

Volunteers and the chefs pulled out all the stops leading up to the big day. Many pots, kitchens of commitment and rescuing food that otherwise would’ve gone to waste are just some of the other ingredients that went into making the souperb feast possible.

Thanks to their efforts, 400 000 people received a warm meal that they otherwise might not have had. To put that into perspective, that’s a town. A few thousand schools, or multiple neighbourhoods.

Who are Chefs with Compassion?

Chefs with Compassion is a collaboration of people who want to see South Africa better off through more food security. Launched at a critical time during the 2020 stretch of the pandemic, Chefs with Compassion has fed over 5 million people since its inception.

Year-on-year the Chefs have superseeded their litre goals, but their compassion changes lives throughout the year.

Beyond its network of community cooks, the team also rescues wasted food, making sure meals go where they’re most needed—hungry tummies.
