A community have rallied together and raised almost half the amount needed to help this mom breathe a little easier.
Johannesburg, South Africa (20 August 2022) – A Joburg community has rallied together to help a mom breathe a little easier.
Aylisha Escorcio put out a call on social media and BackaBuddy to try to raise funds to
“I live in the South of Johannesburg, and I’m urgently trying to raise funds to help my mom get a portable oxygen tank.”
Julie, her mom, has a chronic lung disease called Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), which was caused due to her having chicken pox severely when she was young. COPD is a chronic inflammatory lung disease that causes obstructed airflow from the lungs. Symptoms include breathing difficulty, cough, mucus (sputum) production and wheezing.
In 2020, during the lockdown, Julie was involved in a major car accident resulting in broken ribs, pelvis, coccyx and sternum. She has been on a long road to recovery; however, due to the accident, she now relies on full-time oxygen as the COPD was trigged more severely.
Her story tragically worsened during a recent hospital stay; her portable oxygen tank was stolen.
Julie uses a portable oxygen tank to be mobile and have oxygen during loadshedding as well as when she needs to travel to go to doctor’s appointments.
Aylisha put out the call on social media with a link to her BackaBuddy campaign.
“I’m asking for any assistance in raising funds to get her a new portable oxygen tank. Any donation amount will be life-saving; a portable oxygen tank is required due to all the power outages.”
The community have rallied together and raised almost half the amount needed in just a few days.
