Brown Lekekela has single-handedly supported the women and children that show up at his safe-haven in Diepsloot. The man has become known as a guardian angel.
Brown Lekekela has been supporting abused women and children through some incredibly tough times all by himself, offering a safe-haven as well as counselling following the horrors of rape and abuse.
Through his ‘Green Door’ initiative, he offers women a place of refuge and provides basic items to help uplift the women. Brown also helps the women gain access to the police and social workers. On average Green Door, helps around 30 individuals per month.
Brown first started as a volunteer trauma counseller at police stations near him and worked his way up to opening his own shelter, where traumatized individuals receive food, a change of clothing, a ‘survival kit’ of essential items – and a quiet place where they can watch inspirational videos and read uplifting books to take their minds off their ordeal. Brown saw that many violent crimes were not being reported because the police stations were too far from where the survivors lived. He decided to become proactive to become the first friendly face individuals see following an attack, offering comfort and assistance wherever he can.
One of the main things that Brown offers is lifts to nearby police stations so that the cases can be registered and the women can receive the justice they deserve. Together with various sponsors and donors, Brown provides women with a ‘survival kit’ containing essential items that help them whilst recuperating, to restore some dignity.
Sue Harwood, who runs a charity called ‘BAGS OF LOVE’ in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg, recently used her birthday as an opportunity to help the Green Door initiative, asking friends to bring along toiletries to fill handbags for this project. BAGS OF LOVE operates almost entirely on donations, providing comfort and upliftment to various individuals and communities throughout Johannesburg.
