Dr Evans traded traditional birthday celebrations for a 50km walk with WSAR heroes in mind. Thanks to her, a first for the organisation was achieved, and her fundraising goal was surpassed!

Somerset West, South Africa (29 August 2023) — In anticipation of her 50th birthday, Dr Nicole Evans geared up for a big birthday walk of good. She laced her walking shoes up for 50kms, where a goal to support Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR) stood in the place of champagne celebrations. After the big day over the weekend, Dr Evans made a first for WSAR possible!

Two years ago, Dr. Evans had lost her brother-in-law to a terrible fall on Table Mountain’s Kloof Corner Ridge. Her birthday wish this year, then, was to honour the WSAR heroes who have saved countless lives and made numerous rescues possible.

Aiming to raise R5050 for the heroes of the WSAR, Dr Evans doubled her goal, with some spare change at R10 480 after inviting others to donate anything from R5 to R50. Others joined in on some of her birthday laps to make matters even more special.

Better than blowing out any candles, Dr Evans made a first for the WSAR possible by becoming the first champion to reach a BackaBuddy target for the organisation. Thanks to her selfless birthday celebration, she will help the WSAR teams continue their work (which is largely volunteer-based) with extra financial support.
