Fatima’s life took a tragic turn when a simple accident left her with severe burns on her feet. Doctors were uncertain if she would ever walk normally again. But, with unwavering support, she healed and is today a symbol of resilience and hope.

Cape Town, South Africa (19 December 2024) – After tragically and accidentally burning her feet in a tub of piping hot water, doctors weren’t sure Fatima van de Rheede would be able to walk normally ever again.

It goes all the way back to two months before her second birthday when Fatima got into a bath of boiling water

“My feet were burnt, completely. I was then admitted to Red Cross Children’s Hospital. It was a difficult time for my parents. They felt responsible even though it was an accident. Two weeks before my second birthday I was discharged and the doctors could not give assurance that I would be able to walk normally again,” Fatima recalls in a video.

But with the help and care of all those around her, Fatima’s journey, which was so early marked by tragedy, would be rewritten to one of recovery and a newfound passion that would see her soar to previously unimaginable heights on those very same feet!

Thanks to the support of the hospital, the doctors and her parents, they ensured that Fatima could walk again and go on to live a full life.

Fast forward 16 years later, Fatima finds absolute thrill in road running and participating in marathons.

“This year I completed my 12th Two Oceans Half Marathon,” she shares.

Fatima is part of the 30 Years of Impact of the Children’s Hospital Trust – a critical lifeline and a channel to access quality healthcare for many children who would otherwise succumb to tragic injuries, accidents and complex illnesses.

Fatima’s story is one that moves us to appreciate the gift of life, the ability to move freely and the power of overcoming unforeseen tragedies, which can give us a greater reason to live life to the fullest… because we’re fortunate enough to!
