Jamielah Liedeman is offering Mitchells Plain women the opportunity to become independent by helping them practice for their Learner’s Licences for free.
Jamielah Liedeman has offered up her skills to help teach over 1000 women the rules of the road. She is a former driving instructor and was Golden Arrow’s first ever female driving instructor back in 2006. She has an extensive knowledge of how to teach people the rules of the road, helping them pass their Learner’s Licences easily.
Jamielah decided to use her skills to help empower the women in Mitchells Plain.
She said she became involved in the programme when community worker Joanie Fredericks asked her to present the classes. After passing their learner’s licences, Liedeman will also teach them to drive.
Fredericks said she was amazed and happy when she saw the women registering for the classes. She said the youngest student was 17 with the eldest being 64.
“This is my way of giving back to the community,”
“I want all these women to be able to drive one day. Apart from the driving, it is also about empowering women to become independent.”
She has confirmed that once the women pass their learners tests, she will help them with driving lessons as well. The oldest woman that has signed up for the learner’s licence class is 64, proving it is never too late to learn to drive.
The women that have enrolled already, are very excited to get started and hope to use their new found freedom to expand their businesses and see places around Cape Town they have never been able to see before.
This is such a great story, especially considering how expensive it is to take driving lessons on a regular basis. Jamielah will change so many lives with this initiative.
