An animal welfare organisation helped people in the Mpophomeni community harvest veggies and good vibes in 2024 thanks to the Funda Nenja Food Gardens!
Mpophomeni, South Africa (07 January 2025) — Funda Nenja Food Gardens harvest all the best vibes and veggies.
Part of the Funda Nenja food relief programme, helping residents grow their own food is a key step in uplifting the Mpophomeni community. After all, when the community is stronger, they have more bandwidth to support the animals in their township just outside of Howick.
It’s all part of the Funda Nenja holistic animal welfare model. Focused on improving the lives of animals through community education with a heavy focus on young animal-lovers-to-be since 2009, the Funda Nenja method offers a strategic bridge between people and pets.
It’s much easier to think about four-legged members of the community when you have a full stomach; especially when you know that there’s more of where that meal came from because you’re the one growing it.
Thanks to thousands of veggie seedlings donated in 2024, it was a good time for the Funda Nenja Food Gardens.
The food relief programme typically works by identifying families in need and then offering them vegetable packs as well as other resources including pet food for any animals.
But, with seedling to go around, people like those part of the Mpophomeni Sifund’ukuphila women’s support group were able to cultivate their own gardens this year.
To celebrate the end of the year and the fresh harvest, the women’s support group popped in to the Funda Nenja team’s offices to share not only their thanks but also their fresh produce.
“This really shows that the local people are grateful for this assistance,” Funda Nenja social worker Zinhle reflected.
