Sharpeville is a Township in Gauteng that has had trouble with service delivery. Today the community is beaming with pride at their own hard work in getting the area up to scratch… on their own dime!

Sharpeville is situated between the two large industrial cities of Vanderbijlpark and Vereeniging in southern Gauteng. Sharpeville is one of the oldest of six townships in the Vaal Triangle. Over the last three years, the community has had trouble with service delivery.

The community was fed up with waiting so they took matters into their own hands and started clearing the public spaces themselves. The community came together, using their own funds, time and resources, and created a space to be proud of!

Modisana Mabale documented the progress over the last three years and shared his pride in his community on the Sharpville community Facebook page.

“For the past 3 years, I have been documenting dumping sites in Sharpeville. Today I am proud to say Sharpeville is a government on its own . This was done without any municipal or government contribution . VIVA SHARPEVILLE GOVERNMENT.” – Modisana Mabale

His fellow community members joined in his excitement and shared their pride for the amazing achievement.

“This is beautiful. Big up to everyone who had a hand in this. May we see this spreading throughout the township. We truly are a City” – Tsoana Nhlapo

Modisana Mabale has thanked his fellow community members and asked them to support the people working on the public space. Should anyone have paint, bricks and gardening tools they wish to donate, they can contact Modisana who is facilitating the project on social media.
