The UWC Fairy Godmother’s magic wand landed on just the right three souls, ensuring a student was able to have her biggest supporter, her grandmother, fly to Cape Town to attend her graduation day!
Cape Town, South Africa (29 September 2025) – There are moments that call for having those who have always been in the corner to take the front row and join in the celebrations of our sweet victories.
One young woman was overcome with emotion and gratitude when the generosity of complete and unknown strangers afforded her grandmother the opportunity to fly to Cape Town to see her graduate!
According to the UWC Fairy Godmother, the University of Western Cape student had requested R1,800 to get her main supporter, her grandmother, to her graduation.
“She was assisted by three funders, and she has sent us this update, along with a photo of her and granny at grad,” UWC Fairy Godmother said.
Expressing her heartfelt gratitude, the student said:
“I have been feeling extremely overwhelmed after grad. I would like to sincerely thank you and the generous sponsors for making it possible for my grandmother to attend my graduation.
“Through your support, I received R1,900, which covered her transport (R800 for her trip to Cape Town and R600 for her return trip). The remaining R500 helped me provide food and essentials for her journey.
Because of this generosity, my grandmother was able to be with me on this special day, a blessing I will treasure forever.”
Thanks to three people, whom she had never met before but empathised the significance of having supportive loved ones present for once-in-a-lifetime moments, this young woman and her grandmother were able to experience graduation together – an anticipated culmination of a long academic journey that holds the hope and promise of a brighter future.
The UWC Fairy Godmother provides registered students at the University of the Western Cape with support from generous funders for essential, short-term needs. This support, which includes grocery provisions, transport fare, and clothing donations, helps students overcome financial hurdles and focus on their studies while preserving their dignity.
The charity thanked its funders and supporters for once again extending kindness and making a student’s graduation extra special and even more memorable.
