For one Eastern Cape grandmother, the gift of restored sight after four long years meant finally seeing the face of her number one supporter and getting back to doing life together.

Eastern Cape, South Africa (28 January 2026) – For years, Nowisile Nokhulela and her husband often spent their days working side by side on their fields near Mthatha. However, when she lost her eyesight four years ago, they both found themselves navigating a new and tough reality.

Her husband became her full-time support, as Grace Vision shares, guiding her through daily tasks, helping her move safely around their home, and carrying the load of the work they once shared.

The responsibility of maintaining the household mainly fell on Nowisile’s husband, and although it was demanding, he stayed steadfast, patient, and deeply dedicated to caring for his wife during her years of blindness.

But when Grace Vision recently held an outreach in their village, the darkness Nowisile had unknowingly grown used to would soon be replaced by light, and her husband’s burden would be eased.

Nowisile underwent the standard eye exam before the team of experts gave her the go-ahead to undergo cataract surgery. A simple but life-changing procedure that offered her the chance to see again.

“When the bandages came off, her husband’s reaction was unforgettable. He shared that seeing his wife regain her sight after so long felt like getting his partner back, not just her eyes, but her independence, her confidence, and the life they once shared,” Grace Vision says.

Standing side by side, as you’ll so often find them, Nowisile and her husband are both grateful for her restored sight and look forward to doing life together again as they did before.

“Nowisile’s recovery is not only a medical success. It is a story of devotion, resilience, and the life-changing impact of restored sight in the rural Eastern Cape. Grace Vision is honoured to have walked this journey with them.”
