Para-Cycling

Goldy Fuchs has been selected to represent South Africa and compete in the Para-Cycling Road World Cup so a crowdfund was started to assist him.

Goldy Fuchs was selected by Cycling SA to compete in the upcoming UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup to be held in Emmen, Netherlands from 06 – 08 July 2018, and the World Championships to be held in Maniago, Italy from  02 – 05 August 2018.

At the age of 5 months, Goldy sustained serious head injuries during a motor vehicle accident. As a result of his injuries, the strength of both his right arm and left leg were affected which affects his balance.

“Sadly, Goldy also lost his Dad in the accident. Despite a grim report from the doctors, who told his grandfather that they will give him 48 hours, after which they will ask us to switch off the life support machines, Goldy’s will to live was stronger and he survived. As a family, we stood together, praying and believing that Goldy would get better.”

Despite his disability, Goldy has thrived in the sporting world and made a name for himself.

“I am classified as an asymmetrical quadriplegic and I participate in Para-cycling on a tricycle (T2 classification).”

Goldy has had many highlights in his career to date including:

  • He won a gold medal during the UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup held in Bilbao, Spain on 16 July 2016.
  • He won two gold medals at the UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup, held in Pietermaritzburg on 7 and 8 May 2016.
  • Is the double 2018 SA T2 National Champion and won the time trial and road race in a convincing manner for the second year in a row.

Cycling SA has a self-funding policy and Goldy needs to raise his own funds to be able to participate on behalf of South Africa. It is important for our riders to take part in the UCI events, in order to accumulate points to secure slots for the 2020 Tokyo Para-Olympics. That is why the crowdfund was started.
