Haven Night Shelter on Napier Street is extending its bed spaces for the homeless, but this is more than just an opportunity for a good night’s rest:

Cape Town, South Africa (06 February 2024) — Shelters are a place of refuge for many facing destitute situations, offering a place to rest weary minds and even wearier hearts. But, shelters like the Haven Night Shelter on Napier Street face their own tiring challenges.

In times when more people need a place to stay, the obvious obstacle of being able to accommodate them presents itself. But, in a bout of good news, the Cape Town Central City Improvement District (CCID) has announced that the shelter has expanded its bed count with an increase to 25 more spaces as confirmed by Social Development manager Tara Gerady-Bissolati.

While this may seem like a few drops in the ocean of help for the homeless, it’s those few drops that create a ripple of change!

25 beds means infinitely more chances at changing lives and at multiple more people accessing support beyond pillows through the social work, the shelter prides itself on.

Why These Are More Than More Bed Spaces

The Shelter employs full-time workers who help get the homeless not only to a safe space and beds, but to the starting block of a life-changing process. Those who want to access its helpful services and are willing to work on a personal development plan with a goal to get to a point of no longer being homeless become known as ‘clients’. This is part of a dignity-reaffirming process. Other measures like being registered on a database also take place so that the option of connecting them with their families becomes far easier if it is possible.

Beyond this, there are opportunities to reintegrate back into society through training programmes (the Haven Night Shelter in Kalk Bay, for example, recently celebrated 15 clients working to become security guards) as well as rehabilitation opportunities.

When you take the full spectrum of what the Shelter offers, those 25 beds look a lot less like just a place to stay and a lot more like lifeline chances.
