An angel happened upon a man named Banana the golf caddy in a terrible state—passed out and in a diabetic coma due to not eating enough. But, his story took a turn after their chance encounter and will hopefully change the trajectory of his life:
Johannesburg (22 September 2023) — One Thursday, Pamela Zolkov took a walk around the neighbourhood when she came across a devastating sight. An elderly man was lying across the grass on the pavement near a golf course unconscious. Later, she would share that his name is Banana and that he is a golf caddy. But at that moment, he was simply a human in dire need of assistance.
The ambulance arrived three hours after Banana had passed out and lay in a diabetic coma as Pamela explains.
The paramedics were able to revive him, but his blood sugar was terribly low at 0.8.
“We went through his pockets to try and find his cell phone to see if we could call a family member and we found some pills in a hospital plastic bag that he was taking, and one slice of bread carefully wrapped in tissue – clearly bread meant to be rationed through the day so as not to take the medication on an empty stomach. One slice of bread. My heart shattered and I nearly doubled over crying. He had absolutely no money on him, not even taxi fare to get home,” recalls Pamela.
He was later taken to hospital where he reportedly regained his senses.
“The consensus was that he became this ill because he didn’t have enough to eat. He won’t get better if he starves,” shares Pamela.
Pamela was drawn to help Banana and learned that his health was far from his only hardship.
“I learned that he works as a caddy at the golf course and he travels by taxi every morning to sit outside on the pavement to be allocated “a bag’ to caddy, and if he was lucky enough, maybe one day a week, to get a bag to caddy, he would then be paid in tips only.
“He has a family to support. His clothes were soiled and his shoes ill fitting.”
Since their chance encounter, Pamela has not forgotten about Banana or his struggles. So, she took the matter to the angels of South Africa (The Angel Network) to rally help in the form of clothes, some money to support him and at the very least, hope for Banana to have a full stomach frequently.
Since her sharing his story, help has poured in from people all over, with multiple people sharing ‘done’ referring to the donations they have submitted, big and small.
Items still needed for Banana are canned food, washing powder, soap, peanuts, raisins jungle oats, peanut butter and plastic Ziploc bags.
Anyone called to help him and make this story even more of a life-changing one can email Pamela on pamelaz1961@yahoo.com for drop off for clothes and food or make a donation via the Angel Network:
