The Cheshire Homes do incredible work for the community and are havens for adults with profound mental and physical disabilities.

South Africa (01 February 2022) – Cheshire Homes are located around the world, and South Africa has several facilities too. The homes cater to people with disabilities that have nowhere else to go.

Cheshire Homes was founded by Royal Air Force pilot Geoffrey Leonard Cheshire in 1946 when he welcomed a man with nowhere to go into his own home. Leonard nursed and cared for the man, and a year later, he was looking after 24 individuals with varying degrees of complex needs, illnesses and impairments.

The need for homes that catered to adults with special needs was great, and before long, several homes were opened in the UK. The first international home was set up in Mumbai, India, in the 1960s. Not long after that, the concept spread globally.

Today the Cheshire Homes are a haven for adults with disabilities, especially those who have lost the families that once cared for them.

In South Africa, the homes are not only a place of residence; they offer many services, including day-centres, transport, employment and skills development, to name a few. Many of the centres also have charity shops that help fund the homes’ efforts.

If you are interested in volunteering, finding out more about the homes in your area or the events they have planned for 2022, we have listed the houses below.
