Pillar in the surfing community, Ian Armstrong, faced a stroke of misfortune when the Scarborough fires came blazing. But, his people are not leaving him to rebuild alone!
Scarborough, South Africa (05 January 2024) — Blazing fires caused immense stress for Simon’s Town, Scarborough and surrounding communities.
Community strength held a lot of people together through the tough times, and for one Ian Armstrong, community strength has become a pillar of support through what was lost.
For those who don’t know, Ian Armstrong has a special place in the South African surfing community, and not just because of his former World Big Wave Champ status.
Ian’s craft as a surfboard shaper has earned him praise and respect from surfers all over. Beyond being a passion for him, it’s also his family’s main source of income.
So, when the wildfire caught wind and travelled to Scarborough, residents were rightfully concerned about their little haven. Luckily, there was almost no damage to the area. Unfortunately, the reported damage happened to impact none other than Ian’s shaping room.
According to Andrew, the friend who created a crowdfund to help Ian restore his shaping room:
“Ian has contributed so much to surfing in SA, we now need your help to get Ian back doing what he loves most!”
Remarkably, love and support have poured in for the surfer and craftsman in no time! In just under two weeks, a small fortune has been raised for Ian and the Armstrongs to help rebuild what was lost and start a new chapter.
To date, over R54 000 has been raised—a testament to the community being there for the highs and lows!
