A German tourist wrote a beautiful love letter about the city of Johannesburg, calling it the kaleidoscope city of South Africa. Take a read below…

Markus Mathey visits South Africa regularly, he loves the country so deeply that he had to share it in a letter.

The letter sounds like a love letter by the way he beautifully describes Johannesburg. It is evident that Markus has a true love and passion for South Africa.

Take a read at what he had to say below.

“Let’s begin with the truth: Johannesburg is an acquired taste. Like coffee or a peated whisky. You must want to like it, before you actually can like it. Before you may eventually start loving it.

After 10 years of exposure to the city, I call it my second home. And still, I have to admit that Johannesburg is no postcard beauty. But never mind: Johannesburg is a kaleidoscope! Changing patterns of colour all over the place.

You will understand if you have ever tasted those Pakistani curries in Fordsburg district, and noodle soups in the city‘s Chinatowns. If you ever dared a stroll in the CBD amongst towering architectural masterpieces and joined in with the avantgarde reclaiming the inner city. If you took a walk on the Ridge, amongst the leafy Randlord mansions of old, and peeked across the green suburbs.

Hail thee, if you ever enjoyed a sundowner in one of the many rooftop restaurants of the city, or from infamous Ponte Tower!

Perhaps, sometimes, you need to get away from it. Take a breath. That’s fine. Even an engine can only work through compression and relaxation.”

He ends off his letter with a little bit of detail about an adventure he had while in the City of Gold, one close to that of his life’s work.

“You may be surprised by the exotic things on offer: Skiing in Africa? They make it work for you.

Or this recent one, sand boarding: as a mining engineer by profession, I used to regard mine tailings as waste. However, Addicted2Adventure (A2A) turns them into just the perfect spot for a fun day out. Lekker kuier with all participants included! I keep coming back.

Yebo, I love South Africa!” – Markus Mathey
