Three months ago Judge Raymond Zondo interviewed for the position of Deputy Chief Justice and shared an inspiring story that we had to share, here it is…
Recently we received a link to a video of the Deputy Chief Justice, Judge Raymond Zondo during his interview process for the Deputy Chief Justice position. In the interview he was asked to share a story about a food loan he received as a young man.
Judge Raymond Zondo then started to share the story of how he approached a business man asking for help to support his family while he was away at university.
“I felt I couldn’t go unless I made arrangements for my brothers and sisters to have something to eat. I went into town, to Ixopo, and approached an Indian businessman running a wholesale shop. I told him my story and asked for a loan to support my family.”
“He didn’t ask many questions… said he can’t give me money but a voucher. Once a month my mother was to go to him and take groceries to the value of R20 or R40 until I finished by degree.”
While retelling his story, he burst into tears while explaining that he had returned after three years of studies to pay back the food loan. The business man had said something that blew him away,
‘”No, don’t worry. Just do to others what I’ve done to you.” And I thought that was very important, and in my own small way, I have tried to do that”
The act of kindness has driven Judge Raymond to do good for over 40 years.
Judge Raymond Zondo has been a judge for over 20 years and was offered the position of Deputy Chief Justice with immediate effect. The appointment was made in June 2017.
