Two incredibly brave mountaineers pushed through -60 degrees and winds packing gusts of over 100kms per hour to become the first South Africans to summit the K2!
South Africa (23 July 2022) – Warren Eva and John Black have become the first South Africans to summit the top of K2, the world’s second highest peak!
The brave South-African mountaineers tackled the K2, also known as the Savage Mountain, early yesterday morning. Only 377 climbers have ever managed to reach the top of this mountain, and now that number is 379! In comparison, over 9,000 mountaineers have reached the top of Mount Everest. Although the K2 is 240m lower than Mount Everest, it is extensively more challenging to climb, remote, and infamous for violent weather.
Team K2 SA embarked on the most ambitious expedition South Africa has undertaken since our country’s flag was planted on Everest in 1996.
Solidifying their names in the history books, Warren and John pushed through temperatures of up to -60 degrees and winds packing gusts of over 100kms per hour to stand where only 377 people have stood before!
“The North Face continues to be tremendously proud of our athletes who continue to inspire those around the world and close to home in South Africa!” says The North Face SA Marketing Manager, Stella Heynes.
Climbing with purpose
Warren and John were also using the climb to make a difference in the lives of children who lack the necessities in life, namely food, education and medical care.
Food4Hope is an organization focusing on the most pressing and urgent children’s needs, including food, clothing, school fees and attending to their medical needs. Food4Hope’s vision is seeing the optimal functioning and development of children in need of ‘brain food’.
