Inspired to save lives, Paige Hunter wrote more than 40 heartfelt notes and tied them to the railings of the Wearmouth Bridge and it’s working!
Paige Hunter is an 18-year-old East Durham College student from the UK determined to change as many lives as she can. She was inspired to help save lives by leaving notes of kindness along a bridge in her area. The notes included a number for a hotline that would help people in need.
She knew that people suffering from depression and looking to end their lives would head for the Wearmouth Bridge so she wrote 40 notes of kindness, telling these people that they were important. One of the notes read,
‘Even though things are difficult, your life matters; you’re a shining light in a dark world, so just hold on’.
Local law enforcement was made aware of the helpful signs and decided to award Paige for her kindness.
“We thought it was important to applaud the work Paige has been doing and the help she has given those in Sunderland who are going through a mental health crisis.” – Northumbria Police Chief, Superintendent, Sarah Pitt
“Paige has shown an incredible understanding of vulnerable people in need of support, and this is an innovative way to reach out to those in a dark place. She should be very proud of herself.”
Paige was touched by the recognition but said she hadn’t set out to receive an award. She just wanted to save lives and she has! According to the police department, her notes have already saved 6 lives since they were placed on the bridge.
