All he asked for was detergent to wash his son’s school clothes… Thanks to Kyle Cassim, we’re crying on a Friday. They’re good tears, though.
Johannesburg, South Africa (16 January 2026) – The South African 5FM radio presenter did a good thing.
Kyle was stopped by a car guard after arriving at a local shopping centre. The guard was carrying a newspaper. He quietly approached Kyle, pointing at a bag of washing detergent advertised in the paper. He quietly asked Kyle to buy it for him. Asking a stranger probably wasn’t what he wanted to do, but it was his last option. His son’s school clothes needed to be washed.
“So many kids will start school this week without the basic necessities. When this man asked me to buy him detergent to wash his son’s clothes for going back to school I burst into tears and had to show him some love,” shared Kyle, recounting the interaction on social media.
With help from Julia, a worker at the shop, Kyle went the extra mile. Stationery, a lunch box, bread, snacks. All of the basics needed for the young boy to start the school year on a good note.
Before handing everything over, he wrote a letter. In it, he wished DouDou good luck with grade 8. He told him to always believe in himself, work hard, and never give up. It ended with ‘you have a great father who loves you very much.’
“I hope his son reads this letter and it keeps him going through the tough time.” shared Kyle.
The moment Kyle handed everything over is what made us cry.
The only words the car guard could muster in that emotional moment was ‘God bless you’.
Kyle went in for a hug.

That’s Ubuntu friends. It’s pouring into empty cups. It’s watering somebody else’s garden. It’s making the load lighter for someone struggling to carry it on their own. It’s love.
