With Mandela Day just shy of two months away, Ladles of Love is rallying love activists to get involved and help set a world record of goodness! Here’s how you can join the mission:

South Africa (19 May, 2023) — When it comes to smashing world records for all the right reasons, Ladles of Love has a solid track record, and Mandela Day 2023 will be no different with South Africans’ help!

Last year, Ladles of Love smashed not one but two world records, helping alleviate food insecurity in the process (which the organisation does tirelessly anyway).

No one-trick pony, Ladles of Love is gearing up to box another world record for this year’s Mandela Day, and all of us are invited to join the love activist movement.

Who Are Ladles of Love?

Ladles of Love began when restaurateur Danny Diliberto decided to whip up fresh soup for Cape Town’s homeless.

While walking, I encountered a homeless man wrapped in an old duvet. He was angry at the world, shouting and swearing. I offered him something to eat. The man stopped screaming, said thank you and was gone. The world is a different place when you are hungry. A basic need was met, and dignity restored – even just for a moment. At that moment, Ladles of Love was born,” he shared.

Ladles of Love grew from a single soup kitchen to one of SA’s biggest feeding powerhouses, supplying vulnerable people with nourishing meals from Cape Town to Joburg.

Beyond world record-smashing, they’ve channelled over 3 million sarmies into their NPO network, have helped people from all walks of life connect through food with their Dignity Kitchens and Feed the Soil Programme, support communities with produce, fundraise AND feed futures as well as tummies.

The Mandela Day 2023 Goal

Ladles of Love is gearing up to achieve the highest number of volunteers doing 67 minutes to make items that nourish, nurture and grow children.

6700 people are needed to volunteer their time (67 minutes) and contribute funding to nourish children’s bodies and minds in the early stages of childhood development within communities in need for this record to be.

We can do this by:

  • Making (meals or sandwiches)
  • Crafting (toys, instruments)
  • Collating (colouring and reading books)
  • Creating (care packs and hampers)
  • Planting (plants with edible seeds)
  • Packing (stationary or essentials)
  • Dispatching (preparing and packing items for the little ones)

The Places to Be

Joburg or Cape Town:

  • Cape Town: V&A Waterfront Look Out and Oranjezicht City Farm Market
  • Johannesburg: AtEds, Old Edwardian Club, Houghton
