Cape Town-based charity Ladles of Love sets out to break the Guinness World Record for the longest line of food cans measuring 6.7kms long.

Cape Town, South Africa (01 July 2021) – Cape Town-based charity Ladles of Love sets out to break the Guinness World Record for the longest line of food cans at the upcoming Mandela Day, 18 July 2021. The current Canadian-held record is 3.28km for 44 966 cans. The Ladles of Love target is 90 000 cans measuring 6.7kms long. Locals are encouraged to donate 67 minutes of their time on Mandela Day and help the organisation smash this world record. The record-breaking attempt takes place outdoors in a Covid-compliant environment at the V&A Waterfront on 18 July 2021 and will be an action-packed day for the whole family.

Mandela Day is a global call to action that celebrates the idea that each individual has the ability to make an impact. Ladles of Love embraces Mandela Day fully and each year creates a platform to honour Madiba’s life and legacy by rallying active citizens to do good.

Ladles of Love Founder, Danny Diliberto explains “Our Mandela Day message is simple. Nelson Mandela fought for social justice for 67 years. And now Ladles of Love is asking Capetonians to volunteer 67 minutes of their time with us on Mandela Day. Last year, we broke a  world record for the most amount of sandwiches made in one hour. Volunteers showed incredible generosity of spirit and we made a mind-boggling 304 000 homemade sandwiches in one hour, which were then distributed to communities in need”, he continues “It was a great way to fill an immediate need for food and raise funds for our ongoing food programmes. And this year we need help to break another record! And all we need are volunteers and 90000 cans to do it!”

To take action against hunger,  people can volunteer their 67 minutes by:

  • Helping to build the 6.7km line of food cans. R125 buys you a 67-minute slot to participate.
  • Donating 400-450g tins of non-perishable food at the Ladles of Love depots
  • Walking the  6.7km Big Walk (Entries R100 donation. Children under 13 pay R50)
  • Buying five 400-450g Denny Soup cans for R100 via Webtickets (Pay R50 for 5x cans to go into the line and R50 donation to the organisation)

Diliberto concludes “Many acts of kindness make one huge impact of love. 90 000 cans mean 36,900 kgs of food that we will distribute to over 300 partner community kitchens.  They will definitely make the most of your non-perishable food donations. People can give tinned foods such as canned fish, vegetables, lentils, and soups. This will help us fight hunger a little more.”

V&A Waterfront CEO, David Green, adds “Food Security is a key dimension of our social impact strategy at The V&A Waterfront. We have huge respect for and value our long-term partnership with The Ladles of Love team, as a natural extension of our work to build a more sustainable, local, and ethical food system in Cape Town.”

This world record-breaking attempt gives everyone the opportunity to join the fight against hunger. And will be done with Covid-safety in mind. Foot-pedal sanitising stations, compulsory face-masks, and social distancing practices will all be followed and enforced throughout the day. And the 6.7-kilometre line, as well as allocated volunteer time-slots, provide adequate social distancing measures.

To help Ladles of Love stage the World Record Breaking attempt at the V&A Waterfront, purchase tickets to volunteer for a 67-minute slot on the day via webtickets here.
