Mpho Selepe, a young girl born with a rare condition, defied all odds and embraced her love for tennis. Born with Proximal Femoral Focal Deficiency, Mpho faced significant physical challenges but is now inspiring others with her determination and courage.
Moletjie, South Africa (17 December 2024) – Being born with a rare physical condition didn’t stop little Mpho Selepe from dreaming big and wanting to enjoy sports like other kids her age.
Born with Proximal Femoral Focal Deficiency, the Grade R learner from Moletjie near Polokwane faced significant physical challenges. However, with the support of Jumping Kids, she received a prosthetic limb that has greatly transformed her life.
Her condition required surgical intervention and access to a prosthesis for her to be independently mobile, the non-profit organisation shares.
“In 2022, she became a Jumping Kids beneficiary and was fitted with the prosthetic equipment that she needed following her surgery. Since then, she has progressed well, especially when participating in her favourite sport, tennis.
“Mpho is part of a roster of children from her province who rely on Jumping Kids for their prosthetic equipment and rehabilitation needs as they grow and develop,” Jumping Kids says.
While there are still some restrictions to the activities she can participate in, Mpho has been learning to adjust to her new prosthetic leg, which has allowed her to move around independently.
She is making the most of her prosthetic equipment, learning to run, and thriving in the sport that brings her the utmost joy – Tennis!
This little girl’s powerful message to other kids bravely facing physical challenges is simple and encouraging:
“A physical disability should not be a limit. I love being active and I try to be as active as I can.”
