After witnessing the daily struggle of malnourished children wandering the streets of Khayelitsha, Mama Mickey created Yiza Ekhaya Daycare, a comforting day home for little ones coming from impoverished backgrounds.

Cape Town, South Africa (03 February 2025) – Touched by the reality of malnourished children wandering the streets in her community of Khayelitsha with each passing day, Mama Mickey was moved to open up her home to them to serve as a daycare centre.

More than just a standard daycare centre, Yiza Ekhaya Daycare has become a day home for the many little children in her community who come from impoverished homes with very little care or supervision during the day.

Mama Mickey along with other loving mothers who work with her, have taken the responsibility to gather these children and care for them.

At Yiza Ekhaya, these children get showered with love, enjoy play-based learning and receive meals to nourish their growing bodies and fuel their minds – something that many of their little hearts yearned for!

With growing numbers of parents looking to send their children to the centre, Mama Mickey has easily become a source of support for families and a beacon of love and care for the children she looks after every day.

With the support of Ladles of Love’s Feed the Future campaign, she ensures her little ones receive the nutrition they need to grow, learn, and thrive.

“We’ve got nutritious food, toys and blankets from Ladles of Love. They also helped us a lot in our soup kitchen during Covid.

“I want to give them a big thanks. You were our pillar in a tough time. Even now, the children in our centre are healthy,” comments a grateful Mama Mickey.

Thanks to this partnership, children once mute and underweight are now thriving, gaining weight, and finding their voices. Yiza Ekhaya is a testament to the power of love and community, a place where hope blossoms and futures are nurtured!
