Meet ‘The Singing Surgeon’, a Cape Town-based Cardiothoracic Surgeon touching hearts and changing lives on the stage and in the operating theatre.
Cape Town, South Africa (29 March, 2023) — Music has changed many a weary listener’s life. However, for one Cape Town surgeon, the sentiment has become incredibly literal. Meet Dr Wilhelm Litchenberg, AKA ‘The Singing Surgeon’, who takes his tenor talent beyond the stage and his life-saving efforts further than the operating room.
Years ago, a young Litchenberg had a dream to become an operatic singer, inspired by his father’s love of music. That dream would nurture a voice more powerful than your typical opera singer’s, singing not just to people, but for them.
Saving a life as part of his practice is one thing. Inspiring others to be part of the process is another.
Through music, Dr Wilhelm Litchenberg’s helps raise funds for all-important heart surgeries across the continent. His foundation—The Young Hearts Africa Foundation—commits to these fund-raising efforts for children in dire need.
The Musical Mission:
“It is the Young Hearts Africa Foundation’s mission to create global awareness of the dire need for specialized cardiac healthcare services among children in Africa. To develop the Young Hearts Africa Foundation into a dynamic, successful fundraising vehicle.
This will be achieved by donating the proceeds from the sales of Wilhelm’s music productions and other local and major international artists, as well as public funding initiatives, towards surgical programs to achieve the ultimate goal of facilitating lifesaving heart surgery for 1000 additional patients a year over the next 5 years.” — Young Hearts Africa.
